"The Fury is Unleashed"

German 16 AM Comments

The Germans got some generally good results. The action in the 7th Army area wasn't optimal but I was able to isolate two elements of the 106th in the center and a regiment of the 99th fell to a long advance after combat result against the 14AC. My SS forces should have some room to move next turn.

Allied 16 AM Comments

I've omitted the surprise rolls. No attack against Monschau, which I think makes sense here. Tom is positioning his troops in the north for an attack on 395's position at Hofen, which is the key to the north in 16PM. My only change here is that 17NW should be one hex south, to cross the river and aid the attack against Hofen. Randy is correct that this forgoes an attack on Monshau, but I think its worth it.

In the south, no US problems yet. 109th's retreat is helpful, since it can now reach 1535 in 16AM, where I'd like it

Moderator Comments:

I consider the attacks by 7th Army the most important on the opening turn and Tom's are optimal. The goal is to Engage or FireFight (FF) the enemy in this area. Advances are not nearly as important because the Yanks must retreat to the Ettlebruck/Mersch line or risk destruction. Retreat rules allow the defender to not have to end up the total number of hexes called for on the CRT away from their original positions. A D2, D3, or D4 against 28/109 can all result in a retreat ending in Diekirch. The attack against the bloody 110th is open to debate. Bruno prefers high odds here to secure the bridge crossing. I recommend a lower odds attack to focus on higher odds against 14 AC in the Losheim Gap. Tom was very lucky against 28/112, getting a D2 to surround 106/424. I advocate a basic 4-1 against 14 AC, hoping for a D3 or D4 (1/3 chance). My only criticism at this point is in the far North. I like to take a 1-1 against 102 AC in Monschau. A D1 or FF can be annoying. Overall, the results were very favorable to the Germans in the center of the map but much less so on the flanks.

Hofen is arguably the most important position on the map during the 16PM turn. The German Player needs to take the village to maintain his timetable for a drive on Eupen. Abandoning Monschau and placing a regiment of 2nd Infantry in hex 1105, as John did, limits the German second turn options in the far North (12SS will be confined to attacking Hofen). In the South, Ettlebruck is a tough nut because it is a town located behind a river. Tom will have to maneuver the Americans out of this position. 9/CCB has effectively been used to backstop and block any potential German Mechanized Exploitation. In the center, a combat unit with a ZOC in hex 1519 will also limit German advances.
