Moderator Comments: The attack against Hofen could have been better executed; the ideal being a 3-1 to give a 50/50 chance of entering the village. This was more than made up for by the phenomenal result against 393 resulting in the entrapment of two Yank regiments in Hofen and near Wahlerscheid. John will be hard pressed to set up a strong defence against the potential Peiper breakout. On the other hand, the Germans have made little headway across the Our River. The placement of 26/39 in hex 1635 is standard fare. An Air Interdiction will have to be considered to prevent giving up too much ground on the Longvilly/Clervaux Road. Placement of 5/15 F.J. along with Brandenberger in hex 1428 is a good threat to breaking the Heiderscheid River Defense Line. John's Allied move is highly unorthodox, dictated by the conditions on the mapboard. He has placed a variation of the classic triangle, with what little he has, that masterfully minimizes the Germans', more specifically KG Peiper's, 17AM options in the North. An ace up the Allied Player's sleeve is Air Interdiction. John has just illustrated how it can be used to completely shut down a section of the road net. At this point, I typically sacrifice a reduced regiment in St. Vith to slow down the German juggernaut. The Yanks cannot afford to do so in this game, and John has appropriately given up some space to spare units. I had always thought that 26/39 in hex 1625 mandated the use of one Air Interdiction counter to prevent giving up too much of the Longvilly/Clervaux road. John has just proven me wrong (kudos to you). There is a strong Allied artillery arm along the Stavelot-Malmedy-Eupen axis and this will be sorely needed for the defense. The Allied 16PM is one of the tougher, if not the toughest, moves in the game. Tom's success near Wahlerscheid prompts me to rethink my defense of Hofen/Monschau and come up with a contingency plan or two (more kudos). |
